India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has shared a positive update on Shreyas Iyer’s health, saying the ODI vice-captain is recovering well and getting all the support he needs.
Iyer’s Injury Scare in Sydney
Shreyas Iyer suffered a serious spleen and rib cage injury during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Initially, the team thought it was a minor setback. But moments later, when Iyer fainted in the dressing room and his vital signs dropped, he was rushed to a Sydney hospital.
Scans revealed a laceration of the spleen and internal bleeding. He was immediately moved to the ICU for treatment. Thankfully, Iyer is now out of the ICU and recovering steadily.
Surya’s Heartening Message
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Suryakumar revealed that Iyer has started responding to messages, which is a big relief for the team. In a light-hearted moment, he referred to the incident as something rare that happens to rare talents.
“Doctors aur physios ne bataaya ki unfortunate tha jo bhi hua toh aisa kabhi hota nahi hai, bahut rare hota hai. Shreyas bhi toh rare hai, toh rare talent ke saath he rare hota hai kabhi kabhi. But theek hai, bhagwan ne saath diya abhi. He is recovering really well. Doctors saath de rahe hain, BCCI is in full support toh jaldi recover ho jayega aur phir saath hi leke jayenge phir usko ghar,” Suryakumar said.
(Translation: “The doctors and physios said this kind of injury is very rare. Shreyas is also rare — rare things happen to rare talent. But God has been with him. He’s recovering really well. The doctors and BCCI are giving full support. He’ll recover soon, and we’ll take him home together.”)
Swift Medical Action Saved the Situation
BCCI’s head of medical services, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, commended the on-field medical team for their quick response, which helped avoid a potentially critical situation. Sources also said that Iyer’s family will be flying to Sydney soon to be with him during his recovery.
Team India Stands Behind Shreyas
The entire Indian cricket team, BCCI, and fans have rallied behind Iyer with wishes for his speedy recovery. While his comeback timeline isn’t confirmed, the positive signs bring hope that the vice-captain will return to the field soon.
