After over a year away from competitive cricket, Umran Malik is back and ready to make his mark. His last appearance was during IPL 2024, where he bowled just one over for Sunrisers Hyderabad in a match against Mumbai Indians. Despite being a part of the team’s victory, Malik’s injury kept him sidelined for much of the season, leading to his release by SRH. Kolkata Knight Riders picked him up, but he was unfortunately ruled out before the season began.
Rebuilding After Injury
Malik first gained attention for his raw pace, consistently bowling above 150 kph. In IPL 2021, his impressive performance for SRH, where he took 22 wickets in 14 games, earned him a call-up to the Indian national team. However, a series of injuries and health setbacks slowed his progress both internationally and domestically. Now, Malik is focused on making his comeback, and he’s set to represent Jammu and Kashmir in the ongoing Buchi Babu tournament in Chennai.
Building Back Up: Mental and Physical Strength
“I’m feeling good,” Malik told ESPNcricinfo. “I haven’t played cricket for a long time. I was injured for seven to eight months, and it was a tough phase, but now I’m excited to be back.”
His preparation for the upcoming season includes playing red-ball and T20 cricket in Kashmir, which has helped him build the necessary physical workload. “We’ve had a registration camp, and now we’re in Chennai for the Buchi Babu. Playing matches is good for my body, and it helps me get back to rhythm.”
Staying Focused on the Bigger Goal
Malik also spent six months at the BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru, focusing on rehabilitation and strengthening his body. He’s now mentally strong, staying focused on his cricket and tuning out outside distractions, including social media.
“Injuries are part of an athlete’s life,” he says. “During that time, I kept my mindset right, and I’m doing well now. I’ll be bowling in full rhythm. I’m not paying attention to social media. My focus is on staying injury-free and playing well for India. After the Buchi Babu, I hope to play in the Ranji Trophy and take wickets to make my comeback.”
Working on New Skills
Malik has also been working closely with former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, who has rejoined Kolkata Knight Riders, as well as his Jammu and Kashmir coaching team. He’s focusing on developing new variations in his bowling.
“I’m working on three to four new variations,” Malik shared. “I’ve had a camp with Abhishek here in Chennai, and it felt great to work with him. I’m also learning a lot from my J&K coaches, P Krishna Kumar and Ajay Sharma. It’s been a great experience.”
The Road Ahead
With a renewed focus on his game and a strong support system, Malik is optimistic about his return to the field. His aim is clear: make a successful comeback, stay injury-free, and represent India once again.
