Young opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi failed to deliver in the final Youth ODI against Australia on Friday. He was dismissed for just 16 runs as Charles Lachmund knocked back his off-stump. The early blow dented India’s start, though the team had already secured the series with a 2-0 lead before the match.
Early Exit After Bright Start
India suffered an early setback when captain Ayush Mhatre was dismissed in the second over. Suryavanshi and Vihaan Malhotra tried to rebuild the innings. The opener played aggressively and hit two sixes, but his attempt to push the scoring ended quickly when Lachmund’s delivery beat his defence in the seventh over.
It was a disappointing follow-up to his performance in the second ODI, where he smashed 70 off 68 balls. In that game, Suryavanshi and Malhotra added 117 runs for the second wicket and set up a 51-run win for India.
India Steady After Suryavanshi’s Dismissal
Despite his early exit, India did not collapse. Malhotra and Vedant Trivedi formed a crucial 69-run partnership for the third wicket. Their stand helped India recover and stay in the contest.
A Young Talent Still Learning
Suryavanshi’s story is still at the beginning. He made history during the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season by debuting at 12 years and 284 days, becoming the youngest player in the tournament’s history. However, his early domestic career has been inconsistent. He scored low in his first few matches and even recorded two ducks against Chhattisgarh.
He showed promise with a 41-run innings against Madhya Pradesh later that year. Despite Friday’s failure, the youngster remains one of India’s brightest future prospects. With more experience, he is expected to find the consistency needed to succeed at higher levels.
