Varun Aaron on Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma: “Gill Must Be Finding It a Bit Weird”

Varun Aaron “Shubman Gill Must Be Finding It Weird”

Former India pacer Varun Aaron has weighed in on the shifting dynamics of India’s T20I batting lineup, suggesting that Shubman Gill might be feeling “a bit weird” as his childhood friend Abhishek Sharma continues his meteoric rise in the shortest format.

Changing Power Balance in India’s T20 Setup

Speaking on Star Sports’ “Follow The Blues”, Aaron pointed out how Abhishek’s explosive form has redefined India’s approach at the top of the order.

“Shubman Gill must be finding it a bit weird because one and a half or two years ago, he was the leader within this combination — in the IPL and T20Is — getting consistent runs. He’s still scoring, but Abhishek Sharma is just obliterating everyone with his strike rate,” Aaron said.

Abhishek, who currently holds the highest ICC rating for a T20I batter, has become a tone-setter for Team India with his fearless stroke play.

“Abhishek Is the Most Vital Cog in Indian Batting”

Aaron praised Abhishek’s tactical awareness, especially his fearless approach against world-class bowlers like Josh Hazlewood.

“Against Hazlewood in the first two games, Abhishek had a method — stepping out, disturbing his rhythm, and forcing him off his plans. He’s found ways to unsettle bowlers,” Aaron observed.

“Going forward, he’s going to be the most vital cog in Indian batting, because if India starts well, they usually win the game.”

Shubman Gill: The Calm to Abhishek’s Fire

While acknowledging Abhishek’s dominance, Aaron also defended Gill’s current role in the team, labeling him the “ice” to Abhishek’s “fire.”

“Shubman Gill is playing the ice role in this combination. Abhishek is the fire. Both complement each other perfectly,” Aaron said.

“In the last T20I against Australia, before rain interrupted, Gill’s unbeaten 26 showed his class. He doesn’t need to overdo things — his timing and positioning do the job.”

Gill’s Focus Shifts to Tests

As Abhishek Sharma takes a short break from international cricket, Gill gears up to lead India in the upcoming two-Test series against South Africa. With both players charting different paths — one redefining T20 aggression, the other stepping into leadership — the duo continues to represent the new face of Indian cricket’s next generation.
