Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Get Stern Message: “Don’t Put Yourself Above The Game”

Steve Waugh Warns Kohli & Rohit Respect the Game

Former Australia captain Steve Waugh has delivered a blunt reminder to India’s cricketing icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, saying no player is “irreplaceable” and that no one should be allowed to “dictate the game.”

Speaking to journalist Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel, Waugh addressed the dilemma facing BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who must soon decide on the ODI futures of both Kohli and Rohit.

“The Game Is Bigger Than Any Individual”

“The players have to take some responsibility and realise that the game is bigger than the individual,” said Waugh. “You can’t put yourself above the game. You’ve got to realise that the game moves on and someone else will take your place. You’re not irreplaceable. So I think the players can’t dictate the game. At the end of the day, the chairman of selectors has got to make a call for the better.”

The Selection Dilemma Ahead of 2027 World Cup

Both Kohli and Rohit have expressed their desire to continue until the 2027 ODI World Cup, but by then, both would be around or over 40. While their experience and star power are undeniable, the physical demands of modern cricket make longevity harder than ever.

Dropping either could trigger massive backlash from fans, yet picking them solely on reputation could risk India’s chances of winning their first 50-over World Cup in 16 years.

Agarkar’s Tightrope Walk

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar finds himself in a tricky position. Though he has hinted that both stalwarts have some leeway given their stature, insiders from the BCCI have suggested that selection will be purely merit-based.

Rohit recently won Player of the Series in the ODIs against Australia, while Kohli found form again with a fine innings in the final match — further complicating Agarkar’s decision-making process.

“Communication Is Key,” Says Waugh

Waugh also emphasized the importance of open communication between selectors and senior players.
“You’ve got to be open and honest with the players as chairman of selectors. You can’t afford to be too close to them. There has to be some distance because tough calls have to be made,” he said.

“I hope Ajit Agarkar maintains a good relationship with the players, but also enough distance to make objective decisions. Communication with experienced players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma is crucial — you need to understand what they’re thinking, but ultimately, the chairman has to make the call.”
