Virat Kohli’s ODI Future in Limbo: Ajit Agarkar Seeks Clarity Amid Silence

Virat Kohli's ODI Future Uncertain, Ajit Agarkar Seeks Clarity

Virat Kohli’s future in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) appears uncertain as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) seeks clarification from the star batter. According to reports, Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, reached out to Kohli regarding his plans for India’s upcoming tours. Kohli, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year, remains available for ODIs but has yet to confirm his participation in the white-ball series against Australia.

Concerns Over Lack of Communication

Sources have suggested that the team management is growing concerned due to a lack of communication from Kohli’s end. There were also reports that Kohli, alongside Rohit Sharma, was expected to play in India A’s one-day series against Australia A, scheduled in Kanpur later this month. However, both players were notably absent from the squad announced recently, raising doubts about their availability for the upcoming series in Australia.

Kohli and Rohit: No Competitive Cricket Since IPL 2025

Both Kohli and Rohit have retired from both Test and T20 formats and have not featured in any competitive cricket since IPL 2025. Their last appearance in international cricket was in the Champions Trophy final earlier this year. This extended break from the game has led to growing questions about their roles in India’s future plans, particularly with the ODI World Cup on the horizon.

Fitness Updates: Kohli and Rohit Clear Fitness Tests

Before the Asia Cup in the UAE, the BCCI conducted fitness assessments for its contracted players. Rohit Sharma attended the fitness test at the BCCI’s Center of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru, while Kohli, who now resides in London with his family, reportedly cleared the test from there. Both players have reportedly passed the fitness tests, clearing the way for their return to action.

Shreyas Iyer Takes Break from Red-Ball Cricket

Meanwhile, another senior India cricketer, Shreyas Iyer, has taken a break from red-ball cricket. Iyer, who was set to lead India A in the ongoing unofficial Test against Australia A in Lucknow, pulled out of the squad and returned home. Reports indicate that Iyer cited physical concerns, explaining in a letter to Agarkar that his body could not handle the demands of first-class cricket. Iyer played in the first unofficial Test, scoring 8 and 13 in his two innings.
