Despite a heroic century at Old Trafford, Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar’s father, Mani Sundar, has accused the national selectors of favoritism and unfair treatment toward his son. In a candid interview with The Times of India, Mr. Sundar expressed frustration over Washington’s inconsistent selection despite strong performances.
“Only My Son Gets Dropped After Performing”
Mr. Sundar questioned why his son doesn’t get the same backing as other players.
“Washington has been performing consistently. But people ignore his efforts. Other players are given regular chances—even after failures. Only my son doesn’t get them,” he said.
He also criticized the decision to exclude Washington from the first Test of the ongoing England series despite his form.
“He should be batting regularly at No. 5 and should get five to ten matches back-to-back. How is he expected to prove himself if he’s dropped after one or two bad games?”
A History of Ignored Performances
Mani Sundar recalled some of Washington’s crucial knocks—like the unbeaten 85 in Chennai and the 96* in Ahmedabad in 2021—suggesting even those would have been overlooked had they been converted into hundreds.
“Would any other player be treated this way? He’s been through a lot, but he’s stronger now—and you’re seeing the results on the field.”
Match-Saving Knock at Old Trafford
Washington’s century in the fourth Test was pivotal. Coming in after quick wickets fell, he scored a composed 101* off 206 balls, in a 203-run unbeaten stand with Jadeja. The partnership helped India force a draw and keep the series alive.
IPL Frustration: “GT Didn’t Back Him Either”
The criticism extended to franchise cricket too. Mr. Sundar called out Gujarat Titans for not giving his son a consistent role, despite his strong performance in the IPL 2025 Eliminator where he smashed 48 off 24 balls against Mumbai Indians.
“Even in the IPL, he didn’t get many games. Look at how Yashasvi Jaiswal has been backed by Rajasthan Royals. Washington hasn’t received that kind of support—not in domestic cricket either.”
Mr. Sundar’s comments have added fuel to the ongoing conversation around team selections, favoritism, and fair opportunities in Indian cricket. Whether this will lead to change remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—Washington Sundar has made a strong case with his bat.
