Early and Personal Life

Suryakumar Ashok Yadav was born on September 14, 1990, in Mumbai, Maharashtra. His father, Ashok Kumar Yadav, worked as an engineer at BARC, and his family originally hails from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. From a young age, Surya showed immense passion for cricket and badminton. However, his love for cricket soon took over, and he started playing serious cricket in Mumbai.

He studied at Atomic Energy Central School and later at Pillai College of Arts, Commerce, and Science. His calm demeanor off the field and aggressive style on the field make him a unique personality in Indian cricket.

Early and Domestic Career

Suryakumar made his domestic debut for Mumbai in 2010. He impressed right away with a half-century on debut in the Ranji Trophy. Over the years, he became a vital part of Mumbai’s middle order. He also captained Mumbai and played crucial innings in the Ranji and Syed Mushtaq Ali tournaments.

His consistent performances in domestic cricket kept him in the selectors’ eyes, and his big break came with the IPL.

International Career

Debut and Early Career

Suryakumar made his international debut in March 2021 against England in a T20I match. He made headlines when he hit a six off the very first ball he faced in international cricket – against Jofra Archer. Since then, he has become a regular part of India’s T20I side.

Top-Ranked T20I Batter

In 2022, Suryakumar reached the No.1 position in ICC T20I rankings for batters. He scored over 1000 T20I runs in a calendar year, becoming the second Indian after Virat Kohli to achieve that milestone. His fearless attitude and ability to hit boundaries all over the ground earned him the nickname “Mr. 360° of India.”

Test Debut and World Cups

Surya made his Test debut against Australia in 2023, but he is yet to cement his place in the red-ball format. He played in the T20 World Cup 2022 and ODI World Cup 2023, providing firepower in the middle overs.

Although his ODI consistency was questioned early, his T20 dominance remains unmatched.

IPL Career

Suryakumar Yadav began his IPL journey with Mumbai Indians in 2012 but truly rose to fame after joining Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2014. He played several match-winning cameos for KKR and became known for his unorthodox shots.

In 2018, he returned to Mumbai Indians, and his career took off. He became a mainstay in MI’s batting line-up and was instrumental in their 2019 and 2020 title wins. His 2023 and 2025 IPL performances were among his finest, including a century against Gujarat Titans.

Playing Style

Suryakumar is a right-handed batter who plays with flair. He is known for his ability to innovate – scoops, ramps, and inside-out shots over cover are part of his arsenal. His strike rate is consistently above 150 in T20s, making him a game-changer in the shortest format.

He thrives under pressure, rotates strike well, and can accelerate quickly. His fearless approach often shifts momentum in India’s favor during tricky chases.
